3-Isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) is one of the most potent and nonspecific inhibitors of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (cAMP- and cGMP-PDE). The increase in cAMP level because of phosphodiesterase inhibition by IBMX activates protein kinase A (PKA), leading to decreased proliferation, increased differentiation, and induction of apoptosis. The inhibitor induces calcium release from intracellular stores in sensory neurons.IBMX has been used as a culture medium supplement for inducing adipogenic differentiation, for 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation and in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC).Soluble in ethanol. 3-Isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) is one of the most potent and nonspecific inhibitors of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterases (cAMP- and cGMP-PDE).
