Calcium iodate is a white crystalline powder.
Calcium iodate is soluble in water and nitric acid but insoluble in ethanol.
Calcium iodate is used in animal husbandry and pharmacology. Lautarite is used as a dough conditioner. Calcium iodate is an oxidant, hence it is added to lotions and ointments as an antiseptic and deodorant. It can also be used as an iodine supplement in chicken feed.
Calcium iodate in its powder form is irritating to eyes and has allergenic effects on the skin. Calcium iodate may cause pulmonary congestion and if swallowed, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pains, convulsions and lowering of the blood pressure.
