Tungsten carbides are insoluble in water, but easily soluble in a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acid.
Tungsten forms two different types of carbides with carbon: mono-tungsten carbide and tungsten carbide, which are prepared generally using the metal in powder. Both tungsten carbides are insoluble in water and are used in the production of high-speed tools, also known as widia (India) metals. Tungsten carbides are used for metal surface treatment and welding.
