In surgery, povidone is used as a disinfectant or sterilizer for washing hands and surgical material and in the preparation of damaged skin and mucous membranes before surgery. PVP-I is also used to treat skin infections, fungal and pyoderma and as a disinfectant for external use. In animal husbandry, PVP iodine is also used as a sanitizing and disinfecting udder in dairy animals, pre and post milking.
