BHT is widely used as an antioxidant for industrial use, called BHT Technical Grade, for plastics, elastomers and waxes, oil for electric transformers, hydraulic fluids; it is also used as a fuel additive with the name AO-29. Butylated hydroxytoluene is also used to prevent the formation of peroxide in diethyl ether and other laboratory chemicals.
